Meet Susanne, a rare disease-haver.
At 18, Wingspan Health Founder Susanne Fortunato became sick with an undiagnosed rare disease where she would have random episodes of paralysis.
Between bouncing from dozens of doctors and managing her symptoms herself, it was beginning to turn into a full-time job.
After one bad episode on Halloween night with her costumed friends taking care of her, she knew it was time to take matters into her own hands.
Susanne applied her love of spreadsheets to find her diagnosis.
After turning a 3-inch binder of her health history from past test results to prescriptions to symptoms into a spreadsheet, she began to make sense of years of fragmented healthcare data.
Then within weeks, Susanne showed her findings to the next doctor and received a life-changing diagnosis – an answer that wouldn't have been possible without consolidating and organizing her health information.
After years of working in healthcare tech, Susanne created Wingspan Health.
Growing up as a chronic, rare disease patient and LGBTQ advocate, she knows first-hand the gaps within the healthcare industry for patients.
That's why Susanne spent her early career in healthcare building and launching products at Epic, Athenahealth, and OM1 – including digitizing paper processes at healthcare systems with EMRs!
After another bad episode with her dad in the ER where he had trouble accessing multiple doctors’ accounts online, Susanne saw that this was a problem that computers can solve – this is why we have computers! – and the idea for Wingspan Health was born.

Paul is a marketer who’s helped grow communities for various consumer tech companies at Snap Inc and Blind. He’s a firm believer that people make innovation approachable as well as the companies behind it.
Ben Schmidt, MD
Medical
Ben Schmidt is a physician who is currently training as a gastroenterology fellow in St. Louis. He makes educational and comedic videos on social media under the name Doc Schmidt. These videos aim to highlight different healthcare perspectives and absurdities that he has experienced during his medical training.
