5 Tips for 911 Emergencies

The Gist

You do not need to call 911 in order to go to the emergency room.

Really!?

If you can get yourself there by any other way go for it because:

  1. Ambulances are expensive.

  2. EMTs are most likely trying to get you to go to the emergency room even if they think that you're fine for liability reasons.

  3. The first people to arrive are maybe firefighters and most firefighters are actually trained as EMTs.

  4. An EMT's first goal is to figure out if there's anything that's going to kill you in the next 30 minutes and fix that thing.

  5. Do not expect that the EMTs, nurses, and doctors in the emergency room have all effectively communicated. You will have to repeat yourself and that is both because communication is complicated and they want to hear it directly from you.

What Now?

It's shocking to see how doctors and nurses respond to your complaints if there's somebody there backing you up and validating that what you said happened, actually happened. The emergency room's job is to triage and treat life-threatening problems. This means that you can get sent home from the ER and they could say that everything is fine, but you could have something going on. They just don't think that's about to kill you.
