How to Answer: Do You Smoke?

The Gist

When doctors ask you, "do you smoke?" they are looking to see if you've had more than 100 cigarettes in your lifetime.

Really?!

The baseline criteria for whether you're considered a "smoker" is if you had more than 100 cigarettes in your lifetime. Even if you had an off cigarette one time, you are not considered a "smoker" and you don't need to tell your doctor that you were a "former smoker" or that you quit.

What Now?

If you have had more than 100 cigarettes in your lifetime, even if it was casually, then your doctor would want to know. Also, if you haven't smoked in 10-15 years, you should tell them how long you've quit.
